Mumia Becomes a Target
As a journalist,
Mumia Abu-Jamal reported what he saw and heard. As the former Lieutenant of Information for the Black Panther Party in North Philadelphia, Mumia recognized the biased treatment of revolutionaries as a result of media reporting. He became a reporter to tell the truth contrary to reporters from The Philadelphia Inquirer, The Philadelphia Daily News, and other local press. Mumia’s honest reporting on MOVE made him a target of the Frank Rizzo administration because his reporting contradicted the biased media coverage that dehumanized MOVE to justify police attacks. On December 9, 1981, Mumia Abu-Jamal was shot, beaten, and arrested and wrongfully accused of killing a police officer. The fight to Free Mumia still continues 43+ years later.

Mumia Statement 1
This statement released by The MOVE Organization, likely in 1982, conveys uncompromising support for Mumia Abu Jamal and disdain for city officials. Dictated by John Africa to a MOVE member, the statement offers a rare acknowledgement of the identity of the transcriber (“I’m a MOVE woman”).
