The Black Resistance Tour of Philadelphia uplifts histories of resistance that showcase Black Philadelphia’s distinct approach to political and cultural organizing. Curated by Mike Africa Jr. and Krystal Strong, The Black Resistance Tour can be experienced in two ways: as a bus tour and as a virtual tour.

Bus Tour

The Black Resistance Tour of Philadelphia is not your average sightseeing tour! Led by Mike Africa Jr., the BRT blends powerful storytelling around MOVE history and past and present organizing with a journey to a dozen sites of Black resistance that are essential to understanding the fight for racial justice in Philadelphia, including:

  • The original MOVE headquarters in Powelton Village where Philly police raided and captured The MOVE 9 on August 8, 1978
  • The Cobbs Creek site of the MOVE home on Osage Avenue, where police dropped a bomb, murdering 11 MOVE members on May 13, 1985
  • The Philadelphia Zoo, where MOVE had its first protest
  • The North Philadelphia community where Mumia Abu Jamal was born and raised
  • The Paul Robeson House and Museum, home of internationally renowned singer, actor, multilingual orator, and human rights activist Paul Robeson
  • Malcolm X Park, a West Philadelphia hub of organizing and Black communal life
  • The historic marker of the 1967 Black Student Walkouts, the largest student walkout in US history, where over 3,000 Black high school students protested racism in schools facing brutality from armed police officers
  • The memorial to Black educator and civil rights leader Octavius Catto, the first public monument to a Black person in Philadelphia history

Virtual Tour

The Black Resistance Tour of Philadelphia also exists as a multimodal platform that is a learning resource for community members who would like to experience the sites virtually, educators who want to bring past and present Black resistance into the classroom, or anyone who wants to learn how to make their own Black Resistance Tour.

The BRT site features interactive maps that provide a written description of historic sites alongside visual materials.
